Stanford Online is increasing access to more credential-bearing opportunities for learners around the world by making our robust catalog of courses and open content available through a variety of online learning platforms.
Many courses that had been hosted on Stanford’s Lagunita platform will be made available through edX, the non-profit organization established by MIT and Harvard.
The first set of courses, which launched today, represent some of Stanford Online’s popular offerings in computer science, humanities, data, and math.
Learners may access content for free by auditing a course, or they may enroll in a verified certificate track, which includes assessment, for a fee. The verified certificate is a new option for Stanford Online learners made possible through edX, which offers a financial aid program to support access to its credential track.
Stanford Online courses that are immediately available for enrollment on edX include:
Stanford Online has become an institutional member of the organization, which serves 20 million learners. In this new chapter of an ongoing collaboration, edX will help Stanford Online facilitate increased access to Stanford content for individuals worldwide. In addition, Stanford Online is retiring course hosting on its Open edX platform, Lagunita, at the end of March 2020. Stanford collaborated with the edX organization to release the first open-source version of the edX platform Open edX in June 2013. Since that time, Stanford has contributed features and used Open edX to offer more than 200 free and open online courses to more than 10 million learners in 190 countries.
