What software do I need to view the Stanford Online videos?

Stanford Online videos utilize Microsoft's Windows Media streaming technology. Therefore, prior to viewing Stanford Online videos you will need to install Microsoft's Windows Media Player and have a compatible web browser. For software and installation information please visit the Stanford Online Software page.


On which operating systems can Stanford Online be used?

We recommend using Windows 2000 or Windows XP when viewing Stanford Online content. Our Academic Courses (see list) may also be compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME, and Macintosh OS X.


What are the system requirements for the Windows Media Player?

The minimum system requirements to run Windows Media Player are listed below for each operating system. We also require a broadband connection to view our content.

Can I watch the lectures on a browser other than Internet Explorer?

For optimal performance, Internet Explorer 6.0+ is recommended.

Our Academic Courses (see list) may be compatible with other standardized web browsers. For the full list of browsers that we have successfully tested with Stanford Online, see our software page.


Will I need a login to access the material?

Yes. The majority of Stanford Online media is password protected however there are several seminars and demos that can be accessed without a login. In addition, during the first couple of weeks of each academic quarter all courses remain open to allow students to shop around.

If you are registered in a course and your login is not working, contact SCPD Technical Support via email at scpd-online-support@lists.stanford.edu. If you need a login, please see our password page. Remember that if you are a full time student accessing Stanford Online from an on campus computer, you can access all the content on the "Academic Courses" page without a login.
