Sponsoring Academic Department: Bioengineering
Obtain knowledge and skills essential for the development of new biomedical technologies and enhance your abilities to identify new opportunities for innovation, to assess clinical needs and market potential and to take the critical first steps in the invention, patenting and development of new concepts.
Students learn strategies for understanding and interpreting clinical needs and searching intellectual property prior art. Lectures by a series of experienced medical pioneers and entrepreneurs cover strategic planning, ethical considerations, new venture management, and fundamental financing and licensing strategies. Students analyze cash requirements, create regulatory (FDA), reimbursement, clinical and legal strategies, and develop business or research plans.
Applicants with a background in engineering, medicine, biosciences, patent law, or who have relevant business /technology expertise are encouraged to undertake this certificate study. Master's, medical or doctorate degrees preferred.
All courses are Stanford graduate courses – earning graduate credit, which may later be applied toward a degree program.

To begin working toward this graduate certificate, enroll in any of the required courses as a Non Degree Option (NDO) student.
For assistance in planning your course of study, contact the Biodesign Program: Roula El-Asmar, roula@stanford.edu.
After completing the required courses, submit a Certificate Request form to SCPD.
Upon receipt of the completed form, SCPD will forward the request to the academic department for approval and processing of the certificate.
