"Very useful and well worth the investment in time and cost."
-- Tony Fernandez, Chevron
Stanford Certificate Program
Strategic Decision and Risk Management

Stanford Campus, June 2008

May I take all the courses online?

Most of our courses will be available online. The only course that will not be available online is the core Strategic Decision and Risk Management Practicum. This is a highly interactive session, where participants work in teams on a decision problem, so the learning would not be as effective online.

If I'm interested in only one or two courses in the program, may I take them and will I still have to fill out the application?

You may take as many or as few courses as you wish. No matter the number, however, we do require that all participants complete an application form and be accepted into the program.

How long does the application process take?

The process takes two weeks or less. If you wish to check on your application, please feel free to contact us by e-mail at SDRM_reg@scpdinfo.stanford.edu or phone 1-866-234-3380.

When do you offer courses on Stanford Campus?

We offer courses on Stanford's campus in September, March and June, so you may attend when it is most convenient for you. Also, you may take the online classes at any time.

Will I receive a certificate of completion after each course?

If you attend course(s) on Stanford's campus, you will be awarded a course completion certificate on the last day. If you choose to take the course(s) online, you must pass a test to earn the course completion certificate.

When will I receive a Strategic and Decision Risk Management Professional Certificate?

If you attend the two core courses and take four electives on campus, you will be awarded the SDRM professional certificate on completion. If you choose to take the courses online, you must pass each course test to be eligible for the certificate.

Will I earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the courses? How many?

When you register, you have the option of requesting CEUs for a fee of $75 per course.

May I obtain a transcript from Stanford after completing the course?

To receive a transcript, please select the Continuing Education Units (CEUs) when you register for the course(s).

What requirements are there in order to earn credit for courses?

For online courses, participants must take and pass an online test in order to earn credit. Participants in on-campus courses are not tested, but we require that participants not miss more than a total of 30 minutes of classroom time.

Will I have to do homework to complete the courses?

No.

Are there reading materials associated with the courses?

Yes, you will receive course materials when you arrive on campus. Any additional prereading materials will be sent to you in advance of the course. For all online courses, you will have access to electronic course materials and will receive any additional books after your application has been accepted.

What is included in the price of each course?

The course fee includes continental breakfasts, luncheons, a reception on the second evening, participation in all sessions, and a complete program materials package. The fee does not include hotel accommodations or travel arrangement.

What is the attendee profile?

The program is designed for mid-career professionals — both decision-makers and those who support their organization’s strategic decision-making and risk management. Since strategic decisions usually are cross-organizational, the program serves diverse areas of an organization, including finance, risk management, planning, engineering, marketing, R&D, IT, design, supply chain, business development, and HR/talent development.

In the 2006 and 2007, attendees were vice presidents, managing directors, senior directors, program managers, market and portfolio managers, and an F-16 pilot. They represented the energy, construction, life sciences, insurance and risk, telecommunications, and oil and gas industries, as well as the military.
