"I'm in charge of areas you would expect for a financial director: payroll, purchasing, financial billing, budgets -- central office administration. I'm also in charge of Registration and Distribution, though... the Customer Service areas of SCPD," says Wray Brett. "I make sure we are customer-driven from the inside out. It's my job to put the right people in the right place, but I don't have to micro-manage with the staff I have; they are self-driven to give the best service possible. I am so proud of the people who work for me -- no, of the people who work with me." Brett has worked at Stanford for over twenty years. "I've been active in the Stanford community my whole career. It's a beautiful place to work. But it's exciting, too -- think about it. You can be on an airplane and download a course..study absolutely anywhere. It's exciting to be on the leading edge of all that technology, to be the best." In summing up the difference between SCPD and other businesses, other organizations, Brett says, "We were having a brainstorming session and we had a corporate visitor. He said 'It's just so refreshing to see a group of people working together.' We were surprised, but that's the difference I guess. We really are a team, regardless of position. It's important that those who do the job have input into how the job is done." |
