Before joining SCPD in August 2000, Mary Echevarri worked in admissions at Stanford University Hospital for five years. "You learn a lot about solving problems for people in a job like that, but now I get to work with students and do something to change the system." Student Services Coordinators assure that the administrative process runs smoothly for every SCPD student, from registration for the first course through completion of a graduate degree. After four years on the job, Echevarri still actively enjoys the challenges of her job. "We can learn from every student and from every situation as a team," she says. "Personally, I try to see it this way: from every interaction, I will learn something to make it better for students in the future. That's how I grow. And I can make a difference for the students while I learn." Echevarri also appreciates having input in developing SCPD's registration processes. "We are totally involved in policy-making decisions to improve the system, and I think that's important," she says. "We also have good team work, and if someone is not busy, we work together and pool our resources to get the job done." When asked about her favorite part of the job, Echevarri says, "The students. Sometime you can develop a relationship, handling their questions through a few years. You may know their voices and communicate via e-mail you almost never meet face to face, but they become important to you." Echevarri pauses, then adds, "Once in a while someone I have helped will come up to my office to meet me and just say 'thank you.' That's the best, really." |
