With 430 member companies, from California to Connecticut and London to Japan, SCPD's Distribution Unit is necessarily complex. The SCPD Distribution staff oversees delivery of all course materials, professor handouts, completed assignments, and examination materials for thousands of students every day. The team also handles mass mailings of bulletins, schedules and other marketing materials for SCPD courses and programs.

"We use every kind of system possible: priority mail, UPS, FedEx, fax, e-mail, and our own couriers," says Frank Maldonado, Distribution Supervisor for SCPD. The level of student service is high. Maldonado says, "When you have thousands of students all over the world, all wanting their class materials and assignment grades ... yes, sometimes we get a lot of questions and a lot of feedback from students. If a student anywhere in the world doesn't receive materials within four days, we want to hear from that student. Our normal turnaround is one or two days."

He stresses that SCPD constantly looks for ways to improve the system, introducing more cost-efficient technology. "We just got a new scanner so that we will be able to e-mail professor handouts and notes as attachments. There are many opportunities for input into the whole process here."

Before coming to Stanford in the Fall of 2000, Maldonado worked in Logistics at Silicon Graphics. He enjoys the change to the Stanford University environment. "I like the culture, the community work. It's a great environment to work in at SCPD. Individuals respect and depend on one another. We are a team; there are no weak links around here, as far as I am concerned."
