"Students rely on us to have the class out, on-air and on time," says Bill Heath, a 19-year employee of Stanford University. SCPD Master Control Operators like Heath are responsible for the on-air switching of classes. They coordinate and monitor the classes, giving feedback to studio operators to make ongoing camera and sound adjustments as needed, assuring the best quality broadcast possible - for live, taped and online delivery. Heath also manages the tape library, supervising proper tape production and coordinating duplication of requested master tapes. "I came to California in 1980, after living on Crete for two and a half years when I was in the Air Force. I became active in Stanford community life almost as soon as I came," says Heath. "First, because of my college interests in the sociological implications of TV, I was with the Media Institute at Stanford. Then, about twelve years ago, I got involved with SITN. Many of the theories I explored in college are directly applicable to my work at SCPD. Heath is comfortable with university life-he grew up very near major campuses in New York City. "I know the advantages of being part of a university community and I enjoy them-the culture, the people. Who wouldn't want to be involved in the Stanford community?" |
