Dr. Andy DiPaolo
   

Dr. Andy DiPaolo is the Executive Director of the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD) and Senior Associate Dean in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. The SCPD, consisting of the Stanford Instructional Television Network, Stanford Online, and Professional Education, is one of the largest professional and distance education organizations in the country.

The SCPD offers credit courses, certificate programs, graduate degree programs, professional education courses, workshops, executive education programs, and contract education in the areas of engineering, computer science, information technology, management, and the sciences delivered in a variety of campus based, on site, and distance education approaches including media streaming on the internet, broadcast television, two-way video, multimedia, and customized courseware.

Leadership Responsibilities:
Dr. DiPaolo's leadership responsibilities include strategic planning, policy formulation, new business and program development, creation of Stanford/industry partnerships, grant and contract development, and implementing advanced technologies for education. Under Dr. DiPaolo's leadership, the SCPD was created in 1994 from an existing distance education organization into a full service professional education, distance education, and media production enterprise. In 1995 he created Stanford Online, the first university program to deliver video-streamed engineering, science and management courses on the internet.

In 1997 Stanford Online was recognized as the "Most Significant Advancement in Distance Learning" by the U.S. Distance Learning Association.In 1998 Stanford became the first major research university to offer a complete MS engineering degree online and today delivers over 200 graduate level online courses to industry professionals and managers worldwide.

Previous Positions:
Prior to assuming his Stanford University position in 1988, Dr. DiPaolo was the Director of Media Services and Consulting Associate Professor of Educational Media at Boston University. Before that he was an Associate Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Toledo He has also held the position of Media Program Training Manager at Indiana University where he received his doctoral degree in instructional systems technology. He has also acted as producer and executive producer for a range of instructional and informational video and multimedia productions.

Advisor Positions:
Dr. DiPaolo has a long history as an advisor to universities, corporations and government organizations in addressing the continuing and professional education needs of distributed learners.

Examples of clients he has served include the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Learning Corporation of America, Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Owens-Corning, Cisco, National Elevator Industry Educational Program, Norwegian Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, National Information Infrastructure-Republic of China, European Commission on Telematics Applications, Council for Higher Education-Israel, Computer and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Harvard University, Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, Colorado School of Mines, Northwestern University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Southern California.

He has also served on the executive team which designed the California Virtual University and has been a member of the national advisory boards of EDNET, TeleCon, U.S. Distance Learning Association, Project on Korea's Information Technology, American Society for Engineering Education, the Association for Media-Based Continuing Education for Engineers, and the China/US Learning Technologies Institute.

Research, Publication and Commentary:
Dr. DiPaolo has conducted research and published in the area of continuing and professional education in relation to media-based and distributed learning. His research interest is in the development of asynchronous education applications, an area which has been funded with grants over the last five years with approximately $2M in financial and equipment support from the Sloan Foundation, Microsoft and Compaq Computers.

Publications in the last few years have appeared in the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks, TeleTeaching, ED at a Distance Journal, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers Transactions on Education, the American Society of Engineering Education's Distance Learning Compendium, the European Journal of Engineering Education, THE Journal, and Education West.

Dr. DiPaolo's expert opinion has been solicited by the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, USA Today, Architectural Digest, Horizon Magazine, Converge Magazine, Money Magazine, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has also presented commentary on NBC News, CBS News, MSNBC, NPR, and the Financial News Network, among others.

Presentations:
Dr. DiPaolo has made over 100 invited presentations at national and international conferences. Recognition and Awards:
Most Outstanding Individual in Higher Education for Distance Learning" by the United States Distance Learning Association. 1993

Pioneer Award from the Alliance for Distance Education in California for "his vision and commitment to distance education, his national and international leadership in the field, and his pioneering efforts in the development of online education." 2000
