True innovation occurs at intellectual intersections. Take courses that draw from a cross section of disciplines to discover a wider context for problems and projects.

Teamwork, synergy, and support

Creative solutions happen during the transfer of ideas and knowledge. The networked, community-driven environment at Stanford is a rich, long lasting resource. Collaborate in groups. Network with a diverse group of individuals who bring their professional and industry perspectives into the classroom.

Stanford Research

Stickybot

A robot that can scale walls.

Mark Cutkosky and the Stanford Biomimetics Dexterous Manipulation Laboratory (BDML) discovered that geckos' controlled adhesion to surfaces can be mimicked by mechanical devices, bringing robots and man closer to scaling walls. Stickybot, a robotic lizard built in 2006, has hundreds of synthetic fibers on all four appendages to match the controlled adhesion found in nature. The military has expressed an interest in applying the BDML-engineered technology to gloves.

Formation Flight

Flight plans for the future.

A team of five doctoral students from the Stanford Aeronautics and Astronautics department have proposed that the aerodynamics of formation flight found amongst migratory birds, which expend less energy while flying south together for the winter, can be applied to airplanes. The cargo and commercial airline industries, not to mention the environment, may benefit from a savings of up to 12% in fuel if they can coordinate and manage flight plans accordingly.

Robot car

A car that drives itself.

Stanley and Junior are part of the DARPA robot competition devised by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to promote research in the area of autonomous vehicles. Prior challenges consisted of navigating through desert and urban terrains within a set time, with no human intervention.

Getting Started

Graduate Certificate

Do you want to earn a credential to advance your career without committing to a master's degree program? Do you already have all the degrees you need and want to explore a new area?

Our graduate certificates are specially designed for students in industry and offer the quality of Stanford graduate content and the flexibility to take courses in areas that meet your interests and requirements. Most can be earned within 1 to 2 years with the successful completion of 3 to 5 courses delivered online. A graduate certificate may only be earned under the Non Degree Option. A successfully completed graduate course may count toward only one graduate certificate.

  • Certificate programs consist of a guided curriculum of graduate courses taught by Stanford faculty
  • Courses are delivered online for study at a distance, according to Stanford's quarterly academic schedule
  • You earn Stanford graduate credit and may apply up to 18 units towards a Stanford master's degree if you are admitted

Note: For first time students, you will need to obtain original transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended. In addition, you need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for benefits under the GI Bill. Send the transcripts and certificate to the address below.

As you complete the online enrollment process, you will be asked to indicate how you will pay for the course. Please click "Purchase Order". This will direct us to prepare an invoice for the full amount of your tuition which will appear in your mystanfordconnection account. After the Financial Drop Deadline, the invoice will be adjusted to reflect the expected amount of tuition assistance to be received from the VA. The adjusted invoice will be sent to you via email with instructions on how to pay your portion of the tuition.

Master of Science Degree

Pursue a Stanford University master of science degree on a part-time basis through the Honors Cooperative Program (HCP). As a HCP student, you will be a fully matriculated graduate student of Stanford University.

Earning a Master's Degree through the HCP:

  • Apply to the academic department through the normal graduate admissions process
  • Complete 45 quarter units of master's degree study in five years or less
  • Receive the same student privileges, rights, and responsibilities as a full-time residential student, including access to the full Stanford curriculum
  • HCP students are welcome to come to campus at any time to attend class, meet with instructors and classmates, and use Stanford libraries

The Stanford Center for Professional Development provides online access to courses and customer service and handles financial transactions for tuition and related fees. The US Government and Military have been granted courtesy memberships in the Stanford Center for Professional Development, which allows you to pursue your master's degree as an HCP student.

While preparing your application, you may take individual courses under the Non Degree Option. Up to 18 graduate credit units earned while taking individual courses or earning a graduate certificate can be applied toward your degree program.

In addition, you need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for benefits under the GI Bill and send it to the address below. An invoice for the full amount of your tuition will appear in your mystanfordconnection account. After the Financial Drop Deadline, the invoice will be adjusted to reflect the expected amount of tuition assistance to be received from the VA. The adjusted invoice will be sent to you via email with instructions on how to pay your portion of the tuition.

Student Spotlights

J.T. Sink

"The Stanford Center for Professional Development program attracted me because of the convenience of streaming video lectures and the great faculty. Steve Stedman has real world experience in peacekeeping in the field with the United Nations. William Perry was undersecretary of defense for acquisition technology and logistics when my airplane, the F-117, was being developed. Later, he was secretary of defense - the top defense job in the government. It doesn't get better than that."
