Frequently Asked Questions: New HTML5 Interface

What's really available for instant playback and download?

Instant or progressive playback is available on all major browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox & Internet Explorer). Progressive playback works on mobile devices with a strong data signal or connection to WiFi. There are two viewing resolution options available (540 and 720) on all browsers except Firefox which only offers the 720 progressive playback option.

For downloading videos, there are two resolution options available (540 and 720) for all browsers. Downloads are only available to desktops/laptops, not mobile devices.

What's the difference between 540 and 720 video resolution? How much space will videos take up on my devices?

Viewers can now select from two viewing resolution options available (540 and 720) on the new HTML5 video player. To change the video resolutions, click the "Resolution" option located on the video player and select from 540 or 720 for the resolution you want to load. Please note that Firefox will only offer the 720 progressive playback option due to Firefox limitations with mp4 playback. For downloading videos, there are two resolution options available (540 and 720) for all browsers. If space is a concern, we recommend that you choose the 540 resolution as this will be the smallest option.

540 and 720 signifies the display resolution of the video file. 720 resolutions will provide a high definition image quality and improved viewing at a larger size; however, videos with 720 resolution will require additional time to load since the size of the file will be much greater than the 540 resolution. File sizes for 720 resolutions will range from 700mb to over 1gb while the 540 resolutions will be approximately 200mb to 600mb for each video.

How do I get my course videos on my mobile device?

You will be able to view course videos on your mobile device through progressive playback or download the video to your desktop/laptop and sync the new video file with your mobile device. For example, if you'd like the video on your iPhone you would download the video file and import it to iTunes. Once in iTunes you can sync your phone with your iTunes library to upload the file to your iPhone.

I'm having difficulty downloading the video in Firefox, how do I fix it?

If using Firefox, do not save the video through the instant/progressive playback as it will not save the file correctly. Please use the download option to save the file. Right click on the download button and use the save video option.

How do I play the course video/mp4 file on my computer after download?

Select your favorite video player. A few examples are Windows Media Player, VLC Player, QuickTime or iTunes.

What can I do with the videos I download?

Watch the videos. When you download the videos you agree that you WILL NOT:

  • Share
  • Upload to the internet or anywhere else other than your own devices for your own personal use
  • Sell or distribute
  • Edit or alter the content in any way

Don't forget: You can be found in violation of copyright law if SCPD video course content is distributed by you. Penalties can be harsh with fines up to $150,000. In addition, distribution of this content is a major violation of the Stanford student honor code.
