"Through Stanford's program I helped create a community of over 4,000 women entrepreneurs across 20 countries."
Her interests were always in international business but she craved female empowerment. She has been able to bring those two together and become an intricate part of revolutionizing the venture capitalist structure for the women of tomorrow.
How did you first know you wanted to become an entrepreneur?
Before I took the Insider's Guide to Silicon Valley Investing (IGSVI) Program, I didn’t even have the idea of becoming an entrepreneur. It was through the program I became inspired. My business partner Elizabeth Galbut whom I met while attending the program and I were both passionate about women innovation and women leaders. We saw the oppurtunity in the market for a female-led venture capitalist firm and decided to take the chance on ourselves. SoGal was a vision of not just providing value-adding capital to entrepreneurs but connecting women internationally in one place for them for them to share lessons, problems and solutions.
What did you find to be the most valuable lesson you learned?
During the program I realized that venture capital was an important aspect to startups. However the information on the subject was intimidating and not transparent. Fifty percent of the program participants were female and my classmates were from 15 different countries. It felt as if we were a think tank creating new ideas with a diverse and global perspective. Elizabeth and I were inspired by the experience and came to an idea of a venture capital firm to help diverse millennial entrepreneurs grow a global business.
What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators?
Don't be afraid to break rules. Entrepreneurship is about creating something from nothing and you won't be able to achieve this if you are fearful of breaking rules. We started SoGal Ventures to challenge the status quo in venture capital because know we can't wait for other people to solve our problems. Instead we want to stand for millions of diverse entrepreneurs and amplify their voices. What we are capturing are huge investment oppurtunities and we could not have pursued this without the courage to disrupt the existing system.
